Maternity Health Insurance
When you are planning healthcare for your time abroad, it may be necessary for you to consider specialist healthcare needs. Asia Health can provide you with a maternity insurance police that will cover your needs during and after pregnancy and even provide you with healthcare cover for the new addition to your family for the first few weeks of his or her life.
Maternity care can be very expensive which is why it is a good idea to have a policy in place as early in the process as possible. Having a baby is one of the most costly things that you can do – there are regular check-ups with your doctor, care and medical costs for the birth itself and post-natal care to take into consideration. Then there is the possibility of complications – costs can rise dramatically if the unexpected happens and if you don’t have the right cover in place then you could be facing a bill for thousands.
You need to be aware of the different types of maternity insurance that are available. When you talk to Asia Health about your maternity policy a member of our team will explain everything you need to know but here is a quick guide.
Standard healthcare policies
Maternity cover is generally included on standard healthcare polices but the depth of cover will vary. It may be that they only offer a very basic level of healthcare so if you want additional cover, for example, for the baby for the first few days after the birth or to take care of any complications that may arise, you may have to add to the policy.
A tailored maternity healthcare policy will deal with all hospital fees associated with the pregnancy and birth, both pre and post natal care, the costs associated with a midwife, new born care for a few days or even for the first month.
Important clauses on maternity policies
One of the most important clauses on a maternity policy is that of the waiting period. This is standard for most healthcare policies and it just means that there is a certain period of time between starting the policy and when you can claim on it. On some maternity policies this could be as much as 10 months, although this does vary from policy to policy. You can have this waiting period shortened if you are prepared to pay slightly more for the policy but again this depends upon the individual provider and policy. If you are planning to start a family while you are an expat or if you want to expand your family then you need to take this waiting period into consideration otherwise it could cost you a great deal of money.
The waiting period can also be applied to the point of conception, so if you do happen to become pregnant before the waiting period has finished you will have to cover the costs of all healthcare during the pregnancy. This will apply even if your waiting period is finished before you have the baby. It is very important that you know about the waiting period on your policy and how it is applied
Geographic location should also be specified on your policy. It could be that you are going to be living and working in a country that may not have the right standard of healthcare for your peace of mind, so if you do have a baby you might want to give birth elsewhere. If you want to live in one country but give birth in another then you need to be sure that the policy will cover you for travel as well as the cost of healthcare in another country.
Your healthcare provider should also be aware of any information specific to your pregnancy. If your pregnancy has occurred after IVF treatment then your insurer needs to know about that, or if you are having a baby after a previous caesarian section. While factors like these tend to be commonplace now they can increase the cost of pregnancy healthcare and this means that your insurance can also be a little more expensive as a result.
Claiming on your policy
Your policy may be one that requires you to pay the costs upfront and then claim back. This is actually much more common now and one of the reasons for this is that people will often choose to switch hospitals part-way through care and treatment and this is a problem for the insurance companies.
Policies for those who are already pregnant
Unfortunately it is unlikely that most insurance companies will offer a maternity policy to those who are already pregnant, which means that you are looking at a substantial bill for care, but you may be able to get a small policy that will cover you in the event that there are any complications during the pregnancy or birth.
However, you should still be able to get a policy that will provide cover for the new-born baby as this is often a separate policy anyway. Even limited cover is going to be much better than having no cover at all.
